Notes
As you’d expect, the stats were extremely even in a one-point game. Both teams made the same number of threes (7) and twos (18), and were only separated by one turnover (Duke 12 UF 13). Duke gained an advantage in effective field goal percentage (50.9% vs. 42.5% eFG) via a more efficient performance inside the arc (1.20 vs. 0.92 pps).
Florida rebounded nearly half of their misses (47.6%), winning the offensive glass 20-11 for a +7 advantage in second chance points (15-8). The Gators only assisted on 4 of 25 made fields goals but consistently threw haymakers throughout the second half, including: a 9-0 run with Duke leading 38-24 (19:36 mark), consecutive three-pointers in a 34-second span with Duke leading 54-45 (9:14 mark), and Boogie Fland scoring 9 of his 16 points in the final 4:04 to give the Gators a 66-64 lead with 0:35 on the clock. And Thomas Haugh was terrific all game with 22 points on 9 of 15 shooting.
With the game tied at 19 at the 7:48 mark, Duke outscored Florida 17-5 to close the first half. Patrick Ngongba and Isaiah Evans became the first Duke teammates to both record 5 blocked shots in the same game.1 Ngongba also had 5 rebounds and 5 assists, along with 11 points. Cameron Boozer scored all of his 13 second half points in the final 11:19, finishing the night with 29 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Duke made just two three-pointers in the second half (2 for 12), but both came within the final 3:29. Cam Boozer broke a 59-59 tie with a three at the 2:39 mark - needless to say this was a huge bucket, as was his driving layup on the next possession. And Isaiah Evans’ game-winner came with 21 seconds to go - it was the same two-man action Duke used at the end of the first half versus Kansas, but this time Evans briefly set the screen before slipping out, as opposed to the ghost screen against the Jayhawks.
Isaiah also hit clutch buckets in the second half with Duke leading 40-38 (middle drive off a DHO at the 14:15 mark) and 44-43 (backdoor cut at the 12:19 mark), both times getting shots at the rim with Florida focused on denying his attempts from three. I also want to point out Cameron and Caleb trapping Boogie Fland in the ball screen for the turnover with 2.5 seconds to go, especially after he just gave Florida their only lead during the last 27:52 - and Maliq getting yet another deflection on the Gators’ final inbound pass to seal the victory. Toughness.
Thanks for reading, Go Duke!
Using the best data available and dating back to the 1985-1986 season, when blocked shots became an official NCAA stat. Apologies if I missed an instance, but either way, incredible defensive performance by Pat and Slim.
