Notes
A tale of two halves is the pretty obvious story from last night, though KenPom breaks each game into quarters.1
The Blue Devils were much better over the final 25 minutes. Louisville led 39-27 with 5:08 remaining in the first half. Duke outscored Louisville 57-34 the rest of the way.
But, since men’s college is the only basketball in world that doesn’t actually play quarters, here are some first half vs. second half stats.
In the second half, Duke made a clear effort to “fight for the paint” as Coach Scheyer likes to put it. The Blue Devils attempted just 6 three-pointers after halftime, while shooting 15 for 18 on two-pointers. The Cardinals started the game 7 for 10 from beyond the arc before making 5 of their final 28 three-point attempts.
Points in the Paint
1H: Duke 14 Louisville 10
2H: Duke 26 Louisville 16
Duke Three-Pointers
1H: 5 for 17
2H: 2 for 6
Louisville Three-Pointers
1H: 10 for 21
2H: 2 for 17
Coach Scheyer went with a shorter rotation after halftime. Cameron Boozer (+20 in 20:00), Caleb Foster (+20 in 20:00), and Isaiah Evans (+20 in 20:00) played the entire second half, while Dame Sarr (+16 in 16:04) and Maliq Brown (+12 in 15:06) logged significant minutes as well. That five-man lineup was on the floor for 14:13 of the final 20:00. Caleb Foster posted a career-high 20 points, including 9 of 11 on two-pointers (again, fight for the paint).
Plus-Minus (Minutes) of 1-Foster / 3-Evans / 6-Brown / 7-Sarr / 12-Boozer
1H: -10 (3:59)
2H: +11 (14:13)
Caleb Foster
1H: 4 points (2 for 5)
2H: 16 points (7 for 8)
Cameron Boozer was the exception to a tale of two halves, with Coach Scheyer noting after the game, “…in that first half, he settled us. If he didn’t do that, it could have gotten out of hand.”
Cameron Boozer
1H: 14 points / 5 rebounds / 1 assist (6 for 7)
2H: 13 points / 3 rebounds / 3 assists (4 for 5)
CFos (20), Isaiah (23), and Cam (27) combined for 70 of Duke’s 84 points.
Thanks for reading, Go Duke!
Of course, this is somewhat estimated every game based on the score every ~10 minutes.
