Notes
Wake Forest generated 1.31 points-per-shot from three, outscoring Duke (0.84 pps) by 21 points from beyond the arc. The Blue Devils attempted 16 triples in the first half, before going 4 for 9 after halftime.1
Duke’s efficiency in the paint and at the free throw line helped offset the three-point advantage for Wake. All of Duke’s two-pointers came inside the paint, while generating 1.30 points-per-shot. In the second half, Duke shot 16 of 17 from the free throw line and 10 of 16 inside the arc. Duke rebounded 50% of their misses for an 18-7 advantage in second chance points and a +21 rebounding margin overall (43-22). Coach Scheyer remarked after the game:
“I just think, for us, it’s to not get bored with what is working. [Rebounding] was our advantage for this game. It is our advantage probably most games with how we’re trying to play. I think we'll be a good three-point shooting team also, when we continue to get really good looks. If you think about the free throws and the points in the paint, that’s 69 points in the paint or at the foul line. I never thought we'd be playing ‘smash mouth’ basketball as much, but it’s a fun style when you’re getting layups and dunks and fighting for great shots. We are just manufacturing it a different way, and the 16 offensive rebounds were huge.”
Duke used a 26-7 run during a six-minute span of the first half to flip a 7-point deficit into 12-point lead with 3:26 to go until halftime.2
Wake Forest cut Duke’s lead to 10 points (61-51) at the 12:23 mark of the second half. Duke’s defense did not allow a made field goal over the next 7:37, pushing the lead to 24 points during an 18-4 stretch.3
The lineup of 1-Foster / 3-Evans / 6-Brown / 7-Sarr / 12-Boozer was +11 (23-12) in 6:56 on the floor, while generating 1.73 points-per-possession.
Maliq Brown and Cameron Boozer combined for 9 assists and 1 turnover.4 Maliq has excellent vision as a perimeter passer, and Cam does a nice job reading the double-team. Let’s take a look at a few examples:
