Quotes & Notes - March 3
vs. Virginia
After every game I always watch the press conference, read the quotes, and study the box score. Quotes & Notes is my wrap-up of Duke’s most recent game(s).
Quotes
“Well, obviously, that was a great win for us. To score 40 points on Virginia, that's a heck of a thing to do in the first half. I just thought our guys came out really ready to play; the defense was terrific. And then, typically against Virginia, you have to call a lot. You have to call your actions because you have to be organized and together. But I thought we did such a good job of flowing into offense, and driving downhill, making the right reads. And then good things happen from that, and we just kept our foot on the gas. But a lot of respect for them, their program, Tony [Bennett] as a coach. And to beat those guys is a great thing. And we know it's such a quick turnaround [to the game at NC State on Monday]. We're going to enjoy this for a few more minutes, and then we're going to move on very quickly.”
- Coach Scheyer on the Virginia game
“...He’s a big-time competitor. And I think sometimes he wants to do so well, and he can be analytical. When he’s just throwing himself into competing, there’s nobody better because he’s a two-way guard. And tonight was a great example…He did such a great job on defense. On offense, making everybody better around him, but still attacking for his. And that’s a tough thing to figure out and have when you have other scorers around you. I thought he was just terrific, I thought he was off the charts. And really proud of him for just competing, defending, shooting, attacking. He did it all tonight.”
- Coach Scheyer on Tyrese Proctor
“Just to take complete ownership. Just to look in the mirror, address what we have to do to get better. It's nice as a coach, I can just be honest. When we have meetings or review – whether it's this game or last Saturday – it’s matter of fact, we've been through so much together, here's what we have to do. I always ask them, if you disagree, tell me; if you see it a different way, tell me; but hardly ever do they because they just want to get better. All these guys, man, they competed. They’ve blocked out a lot of noise through the whole year. They've just focused on what we have to do, and I think we've really gotten better from it.”
- Coach Scheyer on what he liked about Duke’s response over the last week
Stats
As Coach Scheyer mentioned, Duke’s defense was terrific. After the Blue Devils jumped ahead 19-9 at the 12:41 mark, Virginia would only manage two made field goals for the remainder of the half, including a 9:54 stretch without a basket. In the first half, the Cavaliers made just 6 of 26 field goal attempts and committed 7 turnovers. Last night was the sixth time in ACC play that a Duke opponent was below 1.00 points-per-shot from both two and three-point range. Duke’s +26 advantage in points in the paint marked their largest margin so far this season, outscoring UVA 28-8 in the paint before halftime. Kyle Filipowski scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half, while Tyrese Proctor and Jeremy Roach combined for 10 of Duke’s 17 assists. Tyrese also had 15 points on 6 of 8 from the field.
Notes
A list of (mostly) sports documentaries is now added on the recommendations page. I’ve got a few books and docs in my queue, so I’ll continue to update this periodically. As always, let me know if you have something you’d recommend.
In Case You Missed It: Carmelo Anthony and Kid Mero launched the “7 pm in Brooklyn” podcast a few months ago. I loved this discussion on making it to the NBA and Melo’s thoughts on his son’s college plans, and the Draymond Green episode from last week was very interesting as well.
Next Play: Monday March 4 | 7:00 pm ESPN | Duke makes the short trip over to Raleigh tomorrow to take on NC State.
