Quotes & Notes - November 18
vs. Bucknell
After every game I always watch the press conference, read the quotes, and study the box score. Quotes & Notes is my wrap-up of Duke’s most recent game(s).
Quotes
“Okay, one, I'm proud of this win. I thought it was a good win for us, good game. I had a chance for a lot of different guys to play and get that experience. I love the two things for me I looked at. One, the rebounding, 46 to 27. It's good… there's still some things we need to clean up on the rebounds, but overall, it's been much improved the last two games. That's two in a row we've outrebounded the opponent. And we had 23 assists, 7 turnovers, which is great. I think that's how we can play. We had some really good sequences where we flowed into offense…”
- Coach Scheyer on takeaways from the Bucknell game
“For me it's just developing habits, like playing the same way all the time, whether it’s in the second half, whether the score is close or not. What are our standards? How are we pressuring the ball? How are we coming over to protect the basket? Are we making the right kick? ….Of course it’s about the scoreboard, we want to win - but every day, are we building our habits? Are we becoming better? And that’s where our energy is going into.”
- Coach Scheyer on continued improvement
“....We have good guys that want to be coached, that want to be pushed. And so, it's up to us to challenge them and to do that every day. And so, they've responded in every game, because I haven't been necessarily the most positive after these games. I've been very honest. I've been very honest. Like for where we need to get to, here are the things we need to do. And like I thought yesterday, we probably had one of our best practices yesterday. And that's a tough thing coming off a Michigan State game, day off, anxious to play today, and they've embraced it. So, to see some improvement is great. Are we where we want to be? Absolutely not. Was this a good step? Yes, it was another good step.”
- Coach Scheyer on the team’s maturity so far
“I do the same thing and continue the same routine. There is obviously going to be ups and downs in this whole season and you just have to maintain; don't get too high or too low….”
- Jared McCain on his preparation
Stats
Coach Scheyer mentioned Duke’s team assist-to-turnover ratio (3.29) and rebounding numbers (+19) as two stats he was particularly pleased with, including Jared McCain’s game high 10 boards. Of course, it was also great to see Jared shoot it well from three-point range, going 5 of 7 from behind the arc. Tyrese Proctor, Caleb Foster, and Ryan Young combined for 15 assists and no turnovers on the night.
Notes
DBP Update: My goal is to continue putting out Quotes & Notes the day after each game, though last season I often combined two games together for more of a weekly format. Drop me a note if you prefer one format to the other - with the holidays and some travel upcoming, it may take me an extra day to get some of these published as well. I hope to have the next re-watch completed soon but, in the meantime, you can check out any of the games already in the collection.
Next Play: Tuesday Nov 21 | 7:00 pm ACCN | La Salle comes to town for Duke’s last game prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Thanks for reading, Go Duke!
