Quotes & Notes - November 7
vs. Dartmouth
After every game I always watch the press conference, read the quotes, and study the box score. Quotes & Notes is my wrap-up of Duke’s most recent game(s).
Quotes
“...This year, collectively, with the eight guys returning, Jeremy, Flip, Mark, and Tyrese starting and coming back, there's great experience. There's three sophomores still. It's not like we have the most games ever played or four upperclassmen, but it's not easier. There's a comfort there, which is really good. But comfort can make you soft. And so for us, we've doubled down on the work we've put in every single day and not assuming anything…”
- Coach Scheyer on if it’s easier to have more returning experience this year (ACC Media Day 10/25)
“I thought what Jaylen [Blakes], what he did was huge for us. We had kind of stalled out a little bit there in the middle of the first half. And then Jaylen had the steal, and the and one, the three from the corner, which is icing on the cake. But I just love the energy that he brought. Jaylen’s built such a trust level with me knowing on defense, what he's going to do, the energy that he brings. And then for Caleb, I thought he had some really nice plays. I thought he, once he settled in, he's a guy that can really get in our paint. He can create for others. He can create for himself….”
- Coach Scheyer on Jaylen Blakes and Caleb Foster (Postgame 11/6)
“I would say no matter who you play, but like, there's a ton of respect. We didn't talk about anybody else besides Dartmouth. We're going to do the same thing heading into Friday with Arizona. We know they're a high-power team and really good, of course, but for us, it's about growing and maxing out who we can be as a team. And so for tonight, I don't think we played a 40-minute game. I thought we played close to it. There's some lulls. And again, there's plenty we have to clean up and do better but then the goal is for Friday to get close to that. And then for next Tuesday to get closer and then from then on. Just keep making strides throughout the entire season. But I did think overall, we were ready. I thought the end of the first half was great. And I know for these guys sometimes there's only so much you can say. Experiencing it is the best thing. And so now that we experienced that, I think we have a lot to learn from, a lot we can grow from there.”
- Coach Scheyer on takeaways from the first game (Postgame 11/6)
Stats
I’ll keep a running total of the following statistics for the season, focusing on the scoring breakdown in various categories. Specifically, line points (threes and free throws), points in the paint, and points off turnovers. Points per shot (PPS) measures efficiency from the three areas of the floor: twos, threes, and free throws. If you’re not familiar with effective field goal percentage, it weights three-point attempts accordingly (i.e. going 4/12 on threes is the same as going 6/12 on twos). I used to work with a coach who loved to say “win the glass, win the game.” It’s obviously not that simple but, with that in mind, I’ll track rebounding totals this season as well. Here are the statistics from last night:
Notes
In Case You Missed It: Associate Head Coach Jai Lucas was mic’d up at practice recently for the team scrimmage with ACC officials. The video is awesome - I could watch mic’d up clips all day.
Next Play: Friday, Nov 10 | 7:00 pm ESPN2 | Arizona comes to Cameron for the first game of a home and home, with Duke visiting the Wildcats next season. I love the early non-conference games on the schedule, they’re great opportunities for the guys to play in some big time match-ups leading into conference play.
Thanks for reading, Go Duke!
