Duke, ACC, and College Basketball Trivia
Here’s a list of all the trivia questions I have included in past articles - see answers below.
Re-watch #1: Billy Packer and Jim Nantz noted that Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon had become just the fifth teammates to both be named 1st Team AP All-Americans. Duke would go on to have teammates named to the AP 1st Team three times in the future. Can you name them?1
Re-watch #2: This meant the Blue Devils would have to win four games in four days to win the tournament, which had never been done. Four teams had previously played for the ACC crown with the chance to complete this task, how many can you name?2
Re-watch #3: Dahntay Jones was just the second transfer player to play for Duke under Mike Krzyzewski - can you name the first transfer and the third transfer players under Coach K?3
Re-watch #4: UCLA has gone wire-to-wire at #1 four times (the last being the 1972-73 season). Since 1962, only seven teams other than UCLA have gone wire-to-wire at #1 in the AP Poll. How many can you name?4
Re-watch #5: As the last regional final being played, Duke was trying to become the only #1 seed to reach the 2010 Final Four. Since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, the Final Four has only been without any #1 seeds twice. Can you name the two years?5
Re-watch #6: Duke was coming off a loss in the ACC Tournament for the only time in an 8-year span, an overtime loss to Maryland in the championship (I was at that game). Can you name the 7 teams Duke beat in the ACC Tournament Finals from 1999 to 2006?6
Re-watch #7: The Blue Devils had won 22 consecutive ACC road games and 13 of their last 15 games in Cole Field House. Prior to their 22-game road winning streak, can you name the year and opponent of Duke’s last conference loss away from home?7
Re-watch #8: The freshman Rivers was in for a big night, finishing the game with 29 points. Since 2012, only two Duke players have scored more than 29 points in a win against UNC. Can you name them?8
Re-watch #9: The Blue Devils won the ACC regular season before falling to Virginia in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, earning a #2 seed for the NCAA’s. Coach K took his team to the Final Four five times as a #2 seed - can you name the five years Duke advanced to Final Four as a #2 seed under Coach K?9
ACC Tournament Memories: Prior to 2023, the two Hall of Famers had combined to win 41% of all the ACC Tournaments - 15 titles for Coach K, 13 titles for Coach Smith, and 40 titles for all other coaches in league history. The next two coaches on the list are tied with four ACC Tournament Championships each. Can you name either of them?10
ACC Tournament Memories: Dave Odom of Wake Forest coached one the best players in basketball history in Tim Duncan and, in 1996, became one of only eight coaches to win back-to-back ACC Tournaments. Can you name the other seven?11
Re-watch #10: Tyus Jones would go on to be named Most Outstanding Player of the 2015 Final Four. Jones was just the fourth freshman to win MOP since freshmen became eligible in 1973. Can you name the other three freshmen who won MOP, their schools, and/or the year in which they won the award?12
Re-watch #11: Per the ESPN broadcast, this game was only the fourth in college basketball history to see the AP #1 team meet the #1 team in the Coaches Poll. Can you name any of the other three instances of #1 v #1?13
Re-watch #12: Shelden Williams would display his superior defensive prowess throughout the game, demonstrating why he would be named back-to-back NABC National Defensive Player of the Year as an upperclassman. Since its inception for the 1986-1987 season, six different Blue Devils (including Williams) have won NDPOY - can you name them?14
Re-watch #13: Since the 1980-1981 season, a team has won both the ACC regular season, including ties, and the ACC Tournament on 16 occasions - how many can you name (team and year)?15
